Bedtime Story Baby Shower

Amalia is due with Baby Stott in 6 weeks (wow!) so I threw her a baby shower yesterday that, I have to say, was adorable in just about every way!

I usually give children’s books for baby shower gifts because I love to read, and I think it’s important that children have a lot of bedtime story options. Also, I figure children grow out of clothing so quickly it’s hardly worth the money!

Since I knew I wanted to give her books, I decided to do a shower entirely around books and the food that is mentioned in children’s books. Cute, right?
I bought her a book for almost every dish I made, and if I didn’t buy the book, I put a cute frame and picture of the book beside the dish:

Humpty Dumpty = Goat Cheese Quiche; Popeye = Spinach Salad; Velveteen Rabbit = “Rabbit food” of carrots, broccoli and hummus; Where the Wild Things Are = Wild blueberry muffins; Three Little Pigs = Candied bacon; The Very Hungry Caterpillar = Fruit salad
One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish = Strawberry Lemonade
Pat-a-Cake = Vanilla Cupcakes
Curious George = Banana Bread
Good Night Moon = Cheesecake shooters

If You Give a Mouse a Cookie = Chocolate chip cookie favors
Since she doesn’t know the sex of the baby, I had to keep everything gender-neutral, so I decided to go with really bright colors – lots of red, green, blue, yellow and white. The table looked adorable – lots of food and cute decorations.

As a game, I put a bunch of newborn "equipment" in lunch sacks and made people guess what was in each sack based on size and feel. I think I inadvertently stole the show when someone guessed that an item was a nipple cleaner, and I blurted out "What??? What is that?!?" as I grabbed my chest. All of the mothers looked at me and replied, "...as in the nipple for a bottle." Oh!! That makes a lot more sense! All I was envisioning was a bristle brush meeting my chest!!! Guess who's never had a baby!?!

For gifts, she ended up receiving a lot of good loot, which will help her get ready for the big arrival. She got clothes, books, baby accessories, bedding, a diaper genie, and other good stuff.

Sarah Nolan and Laurel Edmondson

In addition to the books, I made her a frame with messages and recommendations for the baby. I got the idea from a Portuguese children’s book, When I Was Born, that’s all about a young boy discovering life experiences. I decided to ask Gordon and Amalia’s friends and family for recommendations about what their child should experience in life. I got a lot of great recommendations – a lot of which I’ve never even done! Even though the project is definitely homemade and shouldn’t be examined too closely (sewing and attention to detail are not my forte!), I think she really liked the gift. And, of course I don't have a picture of the final product! I'll have to take a snap when I visit the baby's nursery!

The shower was a TON OF WORK (I could barely move by Sunday night and had to take today off for a “mental health” sick day!), but Amalia was beyond thrilled with the shower, which is the important part.

Now, all we need to do is wait for the big event!!

(&$#$&#)#$%#$(%) SAAB

I bought my Saab 9-3 in August 2000, and I've loved it! I've never regretted my decision to buy the car; I still enjoy driving it; I still think it looks great; and I still think it runs well. Right up until the time it doesn't!

Two weeks ago, I was driving in rush-hour traffic on a Monday morning and had just gotten over the 14th Street Bridge, when the car engine shook violently and then crapped out. All of a sudden, sitting in the left-hand lane with 40-minutes worth of traffic behind me, I had a dash board lit up and no power steering. AWESOME!

Fortunately, I was able to make my way over to the right-hand lane and crawl up to a side road, where I pulled over and called my auto repair shop. Their verdict was that my serpentine belt blew, and they recommended a tow. AWESOME!

So, after two hours in 100-degree heat (really), the tow truck finally arrived and hauled me to a repair shop close to my house. What I feared would be an $800 repair was in reality $260, so with a $120 tow, I was only out $380. Not great, but not as horrific as I feared.

Unfortunately, my relief was short lived.

By that Friday, my engine light was back on and the car was not operating properly. I was finally able to get my car up to Rockville to the Saab specialists, who found $800 in needed repairs, $600 in "non-priority, but necessary" repairs, and $600 in basic maintenance work. AWESOME AGAIN! After several deep breaths, I opted for a portion of the work, which totaled $1,300.

I picked up my car last Monday night and as I drove it home, I started hearing strange popping noises from the engine. (&$@#($&@#($@#&$@#()$&@#!!! I was so ticked!

Today, I took it back in...third time in three weeks...only to be told that my rear tires are running unevenly and ought to soon be replaced and my front right strut has to be replaced immediately. Another $433.

To summarize, I have a 12-year old car with 108,000 miles that is worth $3,400 and I just put in $2,121 worth of repairs. I'm so bugged! If I had known two weeks ago that $380 was going to turn into $2100, I'd now be driving a brand new convertible! As it is, I'm now stuck with the Saab for a few more months because I'm determined to get my money out of it! This is when life is so irritating!

Celebrating Sawyer's 5th Birthday!

It's hard to believe but Sawyer is turning five-years-old tomorrow. Amazing that he's been in our family for five years!! He and his sweet little brother have been the absolute best additions we've had in our family.

To help celebrate his birthday, I flew to Las Vegas on Friday night and spent the weekend with Allen and his family, as well as Mom, who decided to take a break from radiation to join the family for a quiet weekend. I arrived miserably late on Friday night (as in 3am my time!) and was awoken at 5:30 a.m. Saturday by this space ranger! Loving it! He made this costume at school during Space Day.
Notice the wrist adornment, which is his "communication system." I was told that he just needs to press the buttons and he can speak to mission control.
And on his back was a high-tech duo: an air canister and jet pack. I think my favorite part are the little bum cheeks sticking out in Underoos! It's so five-years old!

As his first birthday weekend treat, he and Allen went to the donut shop and picked up treats for everyone. Walker is now allergic to nuts, eggs and dairy (check out his little medical bracelet), so their family is very careful about "Walker friendly" food. Fortunately, the donut shop has vegan doughnuts, and while they don't sound great to me, Walker seems to love them. Here's the progression of Walker's breakfast:

How about those brown eyes? Ridiculously big and dark brown!

Sawyer's big birthday gift from Mom and Dad was a new blue and black bike. He was quiet proud of it, and he did a great job riding it with Allen.
We all took a quick walk/ride to the local park, where Sawyer and Allen rode around so Sawyer could get used to his training wheels.
After a quick stay at the park, it was pool time! Allen and Joc have a pool in their backyard, which is a really nice feature, especially when it's 100+ degrees!

The little monkies LOVE the pool and are learning to be great swimmers, even Walker who sat in his inflatable ring and flutter kicked everytime we told him to "kick, kick, kick."

Walker LOVED sticking his face in the water! We couldn't believe it! Allen pulled him from the inflatable ring and he immediately started diving into the water! I just love a waterbaby!
How about that impressive belly? Lots of vegan donuts made that gut!
Amazingly enough, Sawyer is learning to read and write and he's doing so well at both. Check out his neat penmanship! I loved this artwork on their kitchen wall - "My Earth Day Promise: Not to Plut the Ar" or "not to pollute the air." Allen told me he spelled the whole thing by himself, which I think is pretty good!
After quiet time on Saturday, Mom and I played with Sawyer in his bedroom (after we cleaned up the 25 books and bucket-full of Legos that were spread across the floor!). At one point, I said to him, "Hey Sawyer, Aunt Susie tells me you're taking karate classes. Is that true?"

He answered yes and, at my request, started showing me some karate moves he's been learning in class. The first one was a half-roll somersault that ended with him on one knee and his arms at 90-degree angles with his hands in a straight line.

"Wow!," I said. "What is that move called?"

I'd write down his reply, but it was a Japanese word that had Mom laying on the floor shaking with laughter.

"Ok, show me another move!"

I got another semi-somesault that ended with straight arms and hands above his head.

"What is that one called?," I asked. "In and out plunge."

"Can you show me one more?"

I got a massive somersault that ended with Sawyer on his back, one knee bent in the air, one straight arm and hand coming underneath the bent leg, and the other straight arm and hand on the other side of the bent leg.

"What's that one called?," I asked.

"Buffalo fighter."

I then started asking him about his teacher and was told that he's called "Master Teacher." I asked about his uniform: "it's a white jacket and white pants and a rainbow belt because I'm in the rainbow class."

We kept talking about it a bit, but then got sidetracked on something else. Ten minutes later, I went downstairs and sat at the kitchen table with Allen and Jocelyn and told them I had just been given a tutorial on Sawyer's karate classes. Jocelyn replied, "Yeah, I need to sign him up for those classes; I keep forgetting."

Excuse me?

I looked at them both and asked, "Do you mean he's not taking classes right now? He just spent ten minutes telling me what he's learned!"

I recounted the whole experience in the bedroom and they were crying they were laughing so hard. It turns out that Sawyer hasn't taken so much as one karate class!! He made the whole thing up!

Allen turned to me at one point and, mimicking the moves of Sawyer, said, "Really? You think we'd be paying for a karate class in which he learns something called 'the Buffalo Fighter'???" He and Joc could just not pull it together!

And where was the little liar?? Right at the table with a cat-eats-the-canary smile. He's such a little stinker!

On Sunday, we officially celebrated Sawyer's birthday by making it a "Choose Your Adventure Day." He got to choose breakfast (pancakes), activity (Shark House at Mandalay Bay), lunch (Cafe Rio) and afternoon activity (pool time).

Here we are at the Shark House.

Sawyer enjoyed the treat for 45 minutes, which made the $80 entrance for everyone WELL WORTH IT! Oy....the whims of a five-year-old who doesn't yet understand money! He did, however, love petting the hermit crabs and stingrays.
Once we got home from lunch, we all took some quiet time, which Nana and Aunt Wacky really needed, and then it was time for some "Walker friendly" birthday cake. Again, a vegan cake is not really my cup of tea, but I have to admit that it was really good. Jocelyn whipped it up and used "egg substitute" to do so, but it tasted pretty darn good. These little guys loved it, which is all that's important!

After two pieces of cake, Walker was still reaching for his big brother's piece! I think we figured out where that belly is coming from!
The birthday king gets a birthday hug from little brother.
Susan, Mom and I loaded the kid down with presents: remote-controlled car, transformer, kick board, pool basketball tool, Star Wars lunch box, Star Wars key chain, and an "adventure set" with binoculars, compass and whistle. With a brand-new bike, this little guy got just about everything that a five-year-old could possibly want! It was a GREAT weekend, and I'm already looking forward to my return trip in September.

Learning He Needs to Wait 7 More Days

This morning, Allen broke the news to Sawyer that his auntie isn't coming for another week. This was the reaction:

Love it! One week and I'm Vegas-bound so I can spoil the pants off this little stinker and his lil' bro!

Turning Over a New Leaf

One of the big advantages to having Jill live across the street is that I have a new workout buddy! She and I have been really good at waking up at 5:40am and hitting the gym by 6am. I hired a personal trainer because...well, let's just say that my body/weight is a real project right now...but on the days that I don't meet with him, I go to a class with Jill. It's been so much fun to work out together and have someone to commiserate with!

Susan just joined the other day so that's been an extra dose of support. So far, the three of us have tried BodyPump, Zumba, Pilates, Body Combat, spin and Body Attack. I've barely made it through some of the classes, but on the whole, I'm feeling like I'm turning over a new leaf and am prepared to get back in fighting shape!

I'm three weeks in, and so far, I've only missed one weekday! Let's see how long I can keep this trend going!

A Capitol Fourth

Another year, another firework display from the Capitol Building. Or, as Chappy put it, "Another year of fireworks that aren't happening in our pants!" Ah, she really does know how to sum it all up!

It was a blistering hot night, which is why I'm not including a photo of me....100 degrees, humidity and my hair do not get along....but it was still fun to do a quintessential DC activity: July 4th fireworks from the Capitol. It's one of those things that makes me love living in D.C.! Minus the heat and humidity of course!

First Time at the Beach for Walker and Sawyer

How adorable is this expression?? Allen and Jocelyn took the boys to San Diego for a vacation, and it appears as though the ocean and beach are a hit! My goal is to get the boys to OBX in the next two years!
