Westward ‘Ho!

Last week, I started working on an assignment that will take me to Seattle for the next eight weeks. I think the project will be very interesting from a professional development perspective – we’ll be providing communications support leading up to the second wave of a workforce reduction – but it’ll be physically demanding (a six-hour flight both ways every week!) and emotionally draining. It’s tough to message, “Thanks for your service, but we’re laying you off.”

So, beginning today through June, I’ll be living in Seattle and commuting home on the weekends. I’m hoping to take one weekend to stay in Seattle and do a little exploring. It’s been 15 years since I’ve last been in Seattle, so I think it’d be fun to stick around one weekend and see what all the fuss is about! I’ll also be able to rack up more air miles and hotel points, which I love!

I’m on my flight now, so here’s to the next eight to ten weeks!

Deep Fried Goodness

I flew home from Colorado today and immediately went about making dinner for Amber, Jill and Jill’s dad, who’s in town to help her put her condo together. We decided last week to make sliders and onion rings. What sounded intimidating was really easy and oh-so-delicious! I started by cutting two large onions into thin rings and soaking them in buttermilk for two hours.Right before cooking, I dredged them in a flour, salt and cayenne pepper mix and then drop them in the boiling oil.The end result was delicious!!As Amber said, “we’ve just added a new recipe to Beach Week!” Yummy!

Jill is Officially a Home Owner!

Two months ago, Jill got word that her landlord was putting the apartment on the market for $385,000, which is about $135,000 more than I think it’s worth. Having JUST finished decorating her apartment after living there only a year, Jill quickly moved through denial, anger and grief to hit acceptance. She went about looking at condos in Fairlington, and within a couple of weeks, she found one that she really likes and that’s literally around the corner from me! Today, she officially closed on a Barcroft model, which is a two-level, two-bedroom, two-bath condo with a huge outdoor space. It’s a great place that she will make absolutely darling with her great taste.

I’m completely freaked out about the prospect of buying something and don’t think I can afford it, but the reality is that Jill paid $350,000 with only $14,000 down, and, as crass as this is to say, I make considerably more than her so I can afford it. However, paying a mortgage likely means significant curbs to my travel passions!

Ironically, in the midst of all of this, my neighbor put his home on the market and I would LOVE to buy it, but I definitely can’t afford it. It’s a Dominion model – the largest in Fairlington – and it’s an end unit that has been completely remodeled by the owner, who’s a general contractor. Unfortunately, he’s asking $480,000-$490,000, which is way beyond what I can afford, but I sure would love to have it!

We’ll see if I can button down and begin saving for a significant down-payment.

Colorado Work Assignment

This week, I was asked to participate in a tough work assignment. One of our clients, a telecommunications company, announced a layoff of 3,300 employees spread across Oregon, Colorado, Texas, Missouri, Florida and Pennsylvania. I was tasked with going to the Colorado facility and being on-site when the announcement was made to the employees.

In previous assignments, I’ve helped companies prepare for a reduction-in-force announcement, but my work has been to prepare the messages, develop a plan and build support materials. This assignment required me to be on-site, assist the vice president with making the announcement to a management team of 20 and a workforce of 200, and help distribute the severance packets to the employees. It was very tough to watch people receive the news and collect their severance packet – many people came up to me with tears streaming down their face, asking about their benefits and final paycheck. One woman was sobbing as she said to me, “My husband just lost his job, now I’ve lost mine, and I’m pregnant.” Very tough.

It made me very grateful for my own job and the current security that I have. I know that I have a very good job that gives me a lot of interesting experiences. I really hope that I’m never on the receiving end of layoff news!

New York Weekend

Amber, Jill and I decided last month to do a quickly weekend in NYC so they could see the Broadway show, Anything Goes. When we discovered that the show, Evita, would be running in previews, we decided to see that show too!

We arrived in NY in under four hours, so for brunch we went to Café Lalo for our favorite steamed eggs and Mediterranean salad. All of the waitresses at Café Lalo are French, and they bring the attitude with them, but we enjoy the food so much!

We randomly decided to drive up to Café Lalo rather than take a cab, and we found parking right at the restaurant. When does that happen in NY? As incredible was that we drove to the hotel to check in and got parking directly in front of the hotel! Again, when does that happen in NY??

We checked into the Hotel Empire, where Jill always stays when she goes to NY for work. She’s good friends with the bar manager and one of the bartenders, Gerard, who is all things delicious. He is such a cute guy!! He’s totally adorable and very sweet to Jill. He’s offered to come to DC to help her on her condo; here’s hoping he comes so I can spend a weekend staring at him in a tool belt!

While they went to their matinee, I drove Amber’s car over to the East Side and shopped at Bloomingdale’s, which I’ve never done before. Then I wandered up Madison and headed to a jewelry store called De Grisogono, which makes these beautiful rings.

I spotted these rings two years ago and have wanted one ever since. I foolishly thought the plain, yellow 14k ring would be about $1,000. Try $5,500! I decided that since I was in NY and had some time to kill, I’d try them on. Well, as luck would have it, they had the 14k ring in a size too small for me, but this one fit perfectly!Oy vey. It’s $30,000! It’s hard to imagine having the financial resources to pay $30,000 for a ring! That’s a car or a down-payment! It sure did look nice on my hand though!!

After reluctantly pulling the ring off of my hand, I picked up the car to head back to the hotel, when I took the chance that Amber and Jill would be finishing up their show. Lo and behold, I pull up to the theater and 10 seconds later they walk out the theater doors! WHEN DOES THIS HAPPEN IN NY? We were dying with laughter about how we were driving all over NYC as though we were out in the country.

The best part was that we headed back to the hotel and arrived at 5pm, right in time to get a parking spot IN FRONT OF THE HOTEL where we could keep the car all night and all day Sunday. NEVER have I taken a car to NY and not paid at least $50 in parking. This trip? $6! Talk about a bargain! After a quick rest and piece of pizza for dinner, we headed to the Marquis Theater for Evita, starring Ricky Martin. We all LOVED the show – the set, the music, Ricky –but we HATED the actress playing Eva Peron. We discovered that it’s rather difficult to enjoy a Broadway show when the lead actress cannot sing. Her voice was really horrible – alternately pitchy and screechy. The show would have been a total home run, but for her. Oh well…it was still loads of fun to see Evita on stage.

After the show, we took a cab ride FROM HELL to SoHo. The cab driver was Muslim – wearing a white robe, with a long white beard and a white woven hat (I wish I knew the proper name for it!) – and I swear he looked like the terrorists you see on the TV news every night. Not to be judgmental, but I was glad my Mom wasn’t in the cab with me. She would have been freaking out!

He was a horrible driver and all three of us thought we were going to lose our dinner. Fortunately, Rice to Riches was well worth the drive! This place is one of our must-do stops while in NY and I just love it!

On Sunday morning, we could not have been lazier. I think we finally made it out of bed by 10am and out of the hotel by noon. Easy does it! Our big Sunday activity was afternoon tea at The Plaza, which was totally delightful! I absolutely loved it and thought it was worth every pretty penny! It was a quick trip to NYC, but loads of fun with my two besties!

Viva Las Vegas!

My signal of acceptance that Allen really has moved his family to Las Vegas is my willingness  to visit them! As an add-on to a work trip to LA, I made a weekend stop-over in Vegas to see my "little people," who I hadn't seen since Sawyer's birthday party in August. Bad auntie! Susan decided to join me so we flew in on Friday morning and by noon we were giggling over Walker's....how shall I phrase this?....beer belly / muffin top. He is H-U-G-E! And 100% adorable.

He started crawling a few weeks ago so he was definitely on the move and we loved chasing after him. I started playing a game of blocks with him, and I had him giving me belly laughs within 5 minutes! Love that! But, what I really loved was discovering that underneath that baby fat are two little dimples on his cheeks!!! Oh, how I love a man with dimples!

By mid-afternoon, we were headed to Sawyer's new school (a gated, private school, thank you very much!) to pick him up. Is it ok to admit that I was tickled pink that when he laid eyes on me, he lit up and raced over to give me a hug?? Talk about the pleasing satisfaction of an auntie!

On this particular Friday, it was Dr. Seuss' birthday, so Sawyer told me all about his snack time of green eggs and ham and his craft time, during which he made a cute Cat in the Hat red-and-white paper hat. I just love a 4-year-old’s enthusiasm!

We left the school and headed to their new home, which is only 5 minutes away, so Susan and I could see their new digs. Thanks to the housing crisis of the past few years - and the fact that Nevada took an enormous hit in the housing market - Allen and Joc bought a 4-bedroom, 3 bath house, with a pool for $309,000. AGH!! I can barely get into a 1,500-square foot, 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom townhouse for $400,000!!

Their house is very much in the Las Vegas mold - stucco walls, tile roof, etc., but they'll put their touches on it and make it great. It'll be a really nice house for them for the next few years while they live in Vegas.
On Saturday morning, Allen and Sawyer came to the JW Marriott, where Susan and I were staying in a full-on suite/apartment! I LOVE having "status" with Marriott!
We had a living room and dining room... ...plus a huge bedroom, 1 1/2 baths and a walk-in closet.

The night before, I casually mentioned to Allen that it might be fun to have a sleep over with Sawyer. Well, the little guy was IN! He came into our room, jumped on the bed with me (after I gave him permission to jump on the bed: "Mommy and Daddy don't let me jump on beds.") and explored for about 10 minutes.

Allen pulled him over and said, "Sawyer, you don't have to make a decision right now, but I want you to think about whether you want to do a sleepover with your aunties tonight in the hotel." Before Allen barely got the last word out, Sawyer blurted, "I don't need to think about it. I want to do a sleepover!" Allen asked, "Are you sure? Mommy and Daddy won't be here; it'll just be you and your Aunties." To our delight, he replied again, "I don't need to think about it. I already made my choice. I want to do a sleepover with my aunties!" And this is why he's my favorite 4-year old!!! A man who appreciates two women willing to put him up in a $700/night hotel suite!
We spent Saturday just lazing around, enjoying Allen, Joc and the boys. We went to breakfast at their usual place and then went hiking in Red Rock State Park, which is only about 20 minutes away from their home.
We had a really nice hike to "Sawyer's Rock", which he and Susan conquered with ease.
Then we found a little alcove where a small waterfall was creating icicles on a small tree. Who knew you'd get icicles in the heat of the Vegas desert?!?
Sawyer had exactly zero interest in being photographed with me. Stinker!
How sweet is this little face??

After our hike, we went out for a yummy lunch and then had some quiet time (which the aunties needed as much as the boys!).

That night, Allen and Jocelyn brought Sawyer over to the hotel and we all hung out for a while. We did a small celebration for Walker's 1st birthday, which is in a week, but he wasn't very interested in the cupcake put in front of him. Maybe when he turns 2!

As Sawyer said goodbye to his parents, he looked like the cat that ate the canary! He was soooo excited to spend the night with his aunties. And it goes without saying that his aunties were just as excited!

During dinner, Sawyer kept asking for stories so we made him give us the first sentence and then we went from there. It’s amazing how creative we had to be to make up stories about “Captain Sawyer (aka Soy-Dog)” and his conquer of Sawyer’s Rock!

On our way back to the hotel room, we passed a large water fountain so we took the opportunity to teach Sawyer how to make a wish. He'd never heard of making a wish, so we gave him a “magic” penny and set him up at the edge of the fountain. He wasted no time in throwing his penny in the fountain and yelling “I want to be R2D2!” Hahaha….he’s so into Star Wars right now!! Susan and I loved that he wanted to turn into R2D2!

We all made our wishes and went up to our hotel room. Susan went into the bathroom to get ready and I started to put on Sawyer’s jammies. All of a sudden: water works. Crying?? Why is he crying??? We’re just putting on pajamas!!

He looks at me with trembling lips and tears running down his face and wails, “I changed my mind! I don’t want to be R2D2! I want to be Sawyer!”

Well, what’s a quick-thinking auntie to do? With a panic-stricken 4-year-old in front me, I hatched the idea that if you can make a wish by throwing a penny in a fountain, then you can un-wish a wish by throwing a new penny in the fountain!

Off we went, down the hall, down the elevator, through the lobby until we reached the fountain. I grabbed Sawyer – clad in nothing but stocking feet and his pajamas – and placed him at the fountain’s edge, where he quickly threw in one penny and yelled, “I don’t want to be R2D2!”, followed by a second penny with the wish, “I want to be Sawyer!” Problem solved. After $0.03, Sawyer walked away with a big smile on his face, secure in the knowledge that he’ll be himself!
After a short bedtime period in which Susie had to make up yet another story about Captain Sawyer, it was lights out for everyone! Is it weird that Susan and I both went to sleep the same time as the 4-year old??

Then, at 6am on the dot, guess who was up-and-at-‘em?!?  The good news for him is that his aunties are always ready for a pillow fight! Although I have to say, age is catching up with me! A 90-minute pillow fight is exhausting! But it made the little guy happy and that’s all that matters!
It was so fun to see Sawyer and Walker! I just love these little ones and am sooo excited to return in a few months to see them again!
