The Holiday Season Begins!

Our family continued our tradition of the past three years by celebrating Christmas a little early with Allen, Joc and Sawyer, since they'll be spending Christmas Day with Joc's parents in Colorado.

The stink bug arrived with his parents and we set about opening Christmas gifts. Sawyer showed us his "excited dance" as he saw the pile of gifts that were essentially all for him. While Joc really hates the gifts that Susan, Mom and I buy him, Sawyer had a great time opening Lego sets, matchbox cars and toy car garages, books, a tent and some assorted toys. He played Santa and was delighted when practically every present he brought to the center of the room was for him. After we finished gifts and lunch, Sawyer took a quick nap in his new Cars tent that Aunt Susie gave him. I took these pictures from my phone camera, so they're not great, but you can still tell the tent was quite the hit!I was asleep in the bed in the same room and was totally charmed listening to the little guy play by himself and talk to himself inside the tent. He was popping up on his toes to look through the mesh screen at the top of the tent and then he'd crash down to the floor, all the while saying "Up...and down!" The best part was when he got a little too excited with his game and came crashing down on the hard-wood floors. "Owww! I hit my head! Oww, that really hurt!" Instead of privately laughing, I could have stepped in and helped him, but he wasn't really hurt and this was supposed to be quiet time. Any interruption by me would have ended the hour and incurred the wrath of my brother!

As it was, he started to unzip his tent door, and when he saw me lying there he and I started to whisper "Boo!" to each other. Soo cute!We soon gave up the pretense of quiet time and began our real adventure...the pillow fight! Last year, Susan and I taught Sawyer the art of pillow fighting and we continued the tradition this year. Thank heavens for king-size beds! We used every square inch as we whacked each other with bed and throw pillows and covered each other with blankets. Here's Sawyer sitting on top of a buried Susan; he's quite the victor!Susan invented a new attack mode - "power paws" in which she stuck her hands in two small throw pillows and roared. Hilarious! After an hour, we were all exhausted and took time to have deep, pensive talks with each other. Love this little boy! After we collected ourselves, we all headed to downtown Littleton for the annual Christmas tree lighting. We lined up along Main Street and cheered as Santa Claus drove by on a float. Sawyer yelled out, "Santa, I've been good! I've been good!" It was so cute to see his enthusiasm and excitement. It'll be a bummer to never spend Christmas Day with Sawyer, but at least we get to enjoy a little piece of the holiday season with him. I love this time of year and am so excited to get the 2010 holiday season kicked off with the little guy!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving was another fun family holiday! Susan and I "kidnapped" Sawyer yesterday afternoon and brought him back to Mom's house, where we had 24 hours of sheer fun.

Our first stop was his favorite restaurant, Ted's Montana Grill, where he gets mac-n-cheez and "lenanade" (lemonade) and his aunties and nana order burgers. He loved dinner, but especially loved all of the drawings of turkeys and trucks we drew on the table's butcher paper. I made the mistake of calling him a "stink bug" and he proceeded to repeat it over and over again. I'm sure Al and Joc will really appreciate that bit of teaching!
Sawyer's new thing is whispering everything - it's hilarious to listen to and watch him try to tell a secret (this is a shot of him whispering - he cups his mouth and whispers exaggeratedly). When he discovered we'd be going to dinner at Ted's, he stopped cold, put his hands to his face in a semi-megaphone and whispered, "they have dessert! They have apple crisp!" It was sooo cute!
When we arrived home, we were good aunties and took Sawyer right up to bed, where we read a handful of bedtime stories before lights out. Susan took one for the team and agreed to share the bed with Sawyer, which ended up working out well for both of them. He didn't end up sleeping sideways and she didn't snore! Win-win!
He woke up around 6am, so we were immediately "on." We started playing a bunch of games and then we made blueberry muffins - Sawyer's favorite!Afterward, we created "Sawyer's Thanksgiving Tree," which included everything that Sawyer is thankful for in his life. It was a very fun process to ask Sawyer about everything he loves and is thankful for. We received numerous answers, ranging from Mommy and Daddy to apples and trees. It was a very fun game and one I think he enjoyed. Our next fun adventure was taking cardboard tubes from wrapping paper and making swords. Susan took on the role as a "warrior" to Sawyer's "soldier" and it was a sword fight for the ages. Susan dressed up her warrior sword with ribbons and mantras "Warriors Never Die...but please watch the lady bits," but Sawyer still succeeded in making Susan "deaded" several times.A few games of Candyland, Memory and Chutes & Ladders later, we were ready for the main event. Mom made a delicious Thanksgiving dinner that tasted just as Thanksgiving should: yummy turkey, smooth mashed potatoes, green beans, corn, cranberry relish, rolls and honey butter. Yum!Sawyer only made it so long at the dinner table, so he and I went upstairs and hunted dragons. You wouldn't believe how many green and purple dragons live outside of Nana's house in Littleton! He spotted all of them through his "ni-knock-uu-lars" (binoculars) and made me run and up and down the stairs to alert the family that a dragon was outside, but that they were safe because we used our swords to "make them dead." Whew...who knew dragon hunting was so exhausting! He also discovered my Bose noise-reduction headphones and was immediately curious. I set him up with some "Jingles Bells" on my ipod and he was good to go! Goota love a kid who loves $600 in technology!

Thanksgiving has recently become one of my favorite holidays because it means a week of vacation that I get to spend with my stink bug nephew! I'm already looking forward next year when we have the second generation stink bug!

I'm Thankful

Today is Thanksgiving Day and in honor of the holiday, I want to remind myself of all of the blessings, advantages and opportunities I have in my life:

1. My family - They may make me crazy (and I'll admit that I probably make them crazy), but I dearly love my family and am grateful for their love, support and encouragement. I'm very grateful that Susan and I live so close together and that we're able to spend weekends and Sundays together. She's one of my closest friends and I'm very grateful for all that she brings into my life. I'm grateful for Allen and Jocelyn and the sweet little boy they're raising. What fun it's been to have Sawyer join our family! He's brought so many smiles and so many laughs to our little family. I'm also grateful for my Mom. She's the anchor of our family and marches through life with quiet determination. She doesn't whine or moan about life's shortcomings, but takes them in stride and does her best with what she's given. I know that not everyone is blessed with a family or even a family that is loving and supportive. I'm sure grateful that I have one!

2. Mexican Food - There is nothing...nothing....I love more than spicy roasted salsa, steaming tortillas, bubbling hot queso, and sizzling fajitas. All major problems can be solved and all events celebrated over Mexican food. It's my epicurean salve.

3. Hotel and airline points balance - While the work demands that force me to travel every week can be exhausting, I love the resulting hotel and airline points! They've allowed me to take trips to Ireland, Mexico and Scotland as well as a few long-weekend trips in the States. There's nothing I love quite like watching my points balance climb up, up and up!

4. Friends - I don't know where I'd be without my friends. I learned a long time ago that one of the secrets of a happy and fulfilling life is to surround oneself with a circle of outstanding friends, and I've been blessed to have such a circle. Regardless of whether they live in Japan (April Smith), California (Karen Castagna & Amalia Stott), Colorado (Tiffany Weaver), Utah (Julianna, Cherstyn & Jill), Washington (Amber, Chappy, Caroline. Paige & Emily) or Europe (Cydney), my friends are there for me through thick and thin. I have an amazing group of girlfriends who love to travel, laugh and eat as much as I do!

5. My home - After two years living the vagabond lifestyle, I finally settled back down in Washington, D.C. and I love my little rented townhouse. It's not much (despite the $400K value), but it's home and I love coming back to it every Thursday night. In recent years there have been many families who've lost their homes to foreclosure or bankruptcy. I'm beyond grateful that I'm not in their ranks and that I've had a steady job that's allowed me to enjoy the comforts of home. There really is no place like home!

6. The church - I've loved being a member of the Crystal City Ward and I've really enjoyed my calling as a Relief Society teacher. I'm grateful for my membership in the church and my knowledge of the gospel. It's a grounding force in my life and gives me a tremendous amount of comfort and peace as I go through my day-to-day life.

7. Adventures - I love all new adventures and am thankful for all of the opportunities I have to explore different parts of the country / world and learn new things.

8. Nature - Ok, ok....I know I'm not a huge outdoorsy girl (you'll rarely if ever catch me in a sleeping bag or tent!), but I love this time of year when the air is a little crisper, the leaves change color and everyone starts to pull out sweaters and turtlenecks. Fall is the BEST season all year and I live for the seasonal changes...especially that we see in our kitchens! Hallelujah for butternut squash, turkey and pomegranates! I love pulling pomegranate seeds out of the pod and putting them in salads, cereal, yogurt, or just popping them in my mouth. Next to cranberries, nothing says Fall and holidays quite like pomegranates.

9. Employment - At a time in which so many American workers have been unemployed for so many months, I've not only been blessed with a job, but an exceptionally well-paying job that provides me with professional challenges and personal flexibility. I'm not just blessed to have employment, I'm blessed to have excellent colleagues, supervisors and clients.

10. My health - A woman in my ward who is also my age and single was diagnosed three weeks ago with leukemia, which has stunned our ward and made everyone a little extra grateful for the blessings of health they enjoy. I'm very grateful for a strong mind and body that allow me to do the things I want to do...well, maybe I can't run a marathon, but that's my fault, not my body's!

Going to See Oprah

I love my friend Jill Chappell. First, she’s one of the funniest and friendliest people I know; she’s definitely my most entertaining friend. But, more importantly, she’s always thinking about her friends and family and tries to find ways to make them happy and fulfill their dreams.

Such was the case last week, when thanks to her gift for gab and her connections through CNN, Chappy was able to secure four tickets to The Oprah Winfrey Show in Chicago!! It’s hard to put into words how blessedly hard it is to get tickets to Oprah’s show. I’ve always wanted to go, but have admittedly done nothing to make the dream happen. I just didn’t have the patience. People wait for YEARS to get in to her studio, but thanks to Chappy, I’ve now seen Oprah twice – once in Washington, D.C. for her special Inauguration show and now on her home turf in Chicago!About a month ago, Chappy emailed Amber and I to tell us of her score and I’ve been giddy ever since. This is Oprah’s farewell 25th season, so she’s pulling out all the stops and hosting a lot of fun guests. We learned that in November, she’d be hosting former President George W. Bush, Marie Osmond, Garth Brooks, and a whole host of other newsmakers and celebrities…PLUS, she’d be doing her final Oprah’s Ultimate Favorite Things Show. Holy cow. That’s the show in which she transforms her studio into Santa’s Workshop and gives away thousands of dollars in presents, including video cameras, computers, TVs, cashmere sweaters, jewelry, food and more. Even though Chappy kept telling us there was no way she’d be given VIP tickets to such an in-demand show, I still couldn’t resist an inkling of dreaming.

As it turned out, we had an excellent show! We arrived in Chicago bright and early on Thursday morning and our first miracle was that we all arrived on time! Amber flew in from Baltimore, Jill came from Reagan and I came in from Pittsburgh. Sometimes, the airline gods are with you! We got our rental car, drove to Midway Airport to pick up Jill’s Aunt Jeanine, who joined us, and then we set off for downtown Chicago. We got to Harpo Studios about two hours early, so we went to Wishbone, a restaurant recommended by Amalia that was really yummy.

At our appointed time, we got in line outside the studio, and miracle #2, it wasn’t that cold! We only had to wait about 20 minutes, which wasn’t bad at all. The saddest part of the wait was being in line with two native Chicagoans, who’d been told the Favorite Things show had already been taped. Drat! I wore my Christmas green blazer just in case the studio morphed into Christmas-palooza! Amber turned me when we heard the news and asked, “Do you believe now that we aren’t seeing the Favorite Things show?” No, not yet! Not until I’m in the studio and see that it’s not happening!

Here’s the thing: I really want an iPad – a free iPad that is – and my theory is that if I wish it to happen, it will! But, it didn’t happen at the Oprah show.
Instead, we were escorted into the studio – much smaller than it appears on TV – and discovered we’d be seeing country music singer Keith Urban and his wife, actress Nicole Kidman. Very fun! Our seats were on the eighth row, so we had a good vantage of the stage.

Oprah was announced and she walked on stage in her bare feet, carrying 6-inch high stiletto heels. Mercy! She had her director help put them on and then she announced Keith Urban, who came on stage and spent about 20 minutes with her.He was adorable – he’s clearly so in love with “Nic” and spent much of his segment discussing how she’d helped him through addiction and rehab (of course…can’t have a celebrity relationship without the requisite trip to rehab!) and how he’s never been better, happier, more secure, blah, blah, blah. I’m really not doing the interview justice – he was extremely sweet and soft-spoken and you could tell what he was saying was coming from the heart.Nicole Kidman then came on stage separately for her segment and she was a lot of fun. She bantered with the audience, talked about her marriage and their daughter and then spoke a bit about a new movie she’s promoting. She’s flat-out beautiful in person – exactly how she looks on screen – and thin, but not scrawny.

The theme of the show was Australia – hence two native Australians as guests – because Oprah is getting ready to go on a two-week vacation to Australia with her season premiere audience (hello, another missed opportunity! And I will admit to secretly wondering if she'd surprise the audience by taking us too! Where do I get these high-falutin' ideas??). In between her segments with Keith and Nicole, she featured stories on Australian life and activities, including a description of how McDonald’s is an upscale bistro restaurant in Australia vs. a fast food joint. As a treat for the audience, McDonald’s employees brought each person a meal that’s only available in Australia – a fruit smoothie and chicken wrap sandwich – plus a $25 gift card to McDonald’s.

Amber said, “That sounds right. We’re the people who win McDonald’s gift cards, not iPads.” Touché. Toward the end of the show, Keith Urban came back on stage with his band and performed a number from his new CD. Jill, Amber and I had a great time dancing along and singing to the song, and we were appropriately excited when Oprah announced that we’d be getting a copy of the CD to take home, along with…drumbeat…a new smart phone from Motorola. After the show, we couldn’t get over our giggles about the McDonalds gift card (“Seriously? We go to Oprah, the woman who gives away homes, cars and diamond watches, and we get a $25 gift card to Mickey D’s??”), but the smart phone is actually a really generous gift. Jill is successfully selling hers on eBay for $350, so it’s not chump change. I’m going to take mine home to Colorado to see if Mom will use it, otherwise, I’m selling it too. As Amber told me, for $350 I’ll be halfway to an iPad!The four of us left Harpo and headed downtown to stroll along State Street and browse through shops. I was appropriately restrained and refrained from making any purchases. First time that’s happened all month! At the close of the day, we opted to go for some authentic Chicago style deep dish pizza. At my colleague Keith’s recommendation, we headed to Gino’s East, which was really yummy. Jill was a bit underwhelmed by the deep dish style – she prefers the thin, brick oven variety, but it didn’t stop us from putting back two slices each!
All in all, our day in Chicago was very fun and a wonderful memory / dream fulfilled thanks to Chappy!

Now….where will I get that free iPad??

Post-script: The day after we were at Oprah, she aired her Favorite Things show…which was taped about a week before we arrived. Her audience got unbelievable loot: diamond watch, 35mm digital camera, sapphire earrings, Tory Burch tote and shoes, Ralph Lauren cashmere sweater and throw, 52” flat-screen 3D TV, Blue Ray DVD player, 5-year subscription to Netflix, 7-day cruise to the Carribean and more...but no iPad!

Done! Finished! No More!....I'm Pooped!

Twelve months after I moved into my new home , I'm finally ready to declare myself done with furntiure shopping, painting, decorating, etc. I still have a long way to go before I'm really happy with the place, but I've painted what I'm going paint, my family room furniture has been delivered, and things are starting to go up on the walls.

I'd still like to buy headboards, art, a living room chair, a living room side table and other odds and ends, but I'm tired....and financially tapped out!! More to come next year!

My living room and dining room. The mirror over the couch is a total beast - it must weigh 100 lbs.
I love my dining room furniture - the wing back chairs are so comfy! And I love my little chicken that presides over the dining room - Mom bought it for me on a day trip we took to Leesburg.Jill and I did a bit of a furniture swap last month. Her parents refinished this dresser, which she used in her bedroom, but I've put it in my living room and use it for my table linens and candles. Love it! The family room. I wanted to create a lodge-like feel and include reminders of Colorado and the West, and I think I've somewhat succeeded, especially considering the room is in the basement! I also put down here a great glass-front bookshelf, which I love! Kitchen. It's small and there's nothing fancy about it! My favorite is the framed menu from Ghiradelli Chocolate Factory in San Francisco that hangs over the stove. It's a fun memory of going to see Grandma and Grandpa Shelden as a child. And, of course all of my magnetics of places I've visited. Normally, I wouldn't like this kind of jumbled mess - I'm far too Type A to have this chaos in my house - but I allow myself the refrigerator for some cluttered fun!

The stairs leading down to the family room. I had a lot of my Washington, D.C. memorabilia framed - invitations to inaugurations, a ticket to the State of the Union address and a copy of an address, and photos from President Reagan's funeral. It cost a bundle of money, but I'm really happy with everything.

I'll leave the upstairs bedrooms for another post. Both rooms have queen-size beds and that's about it, so they need some serious TLC...in 2011!!

It's a Boy!

Susan and I heard from Jocelyn that she's having another boy! Yippee!! We've had so much fun with Sawyer that I'm excited to spoil another little boy! Of course it would have been fun to have a little princess in our family to spoil with tutus, tiaras and tea parties, but a scruffy, dirty little boy is just perfect for a playmate for Sawyer! I can't wait until March when the little guy is due!!

Happy Halloween!

I'm so sad I missed trick-or-treating with Sawyer, but how cute are these pictures?? Apparently, he had Halloween "practice" last weekend with his football uniform and then didn't want to take it off all week! Cute!
On Halloween night though he opted to be Woody from Toy Story. Equally cute! He just looks soo happy!

Susan asked him what Halloween meant and he told her, "I say trick-or-treat, and then I get candy!"

Yep, he gets it!
